As a firm we believe it is important for our staff have a sound knowledge of the farming industry to understand what our clients do. Farm walks offer us the opportunity to gain valuable insight into what happens day to day on a farm and the challenges our clients face.
We have not been able to organise a farm walk over the last 18 months and were excited to restart them this month. Our trip was to E W Davies Farms Limited, a LEAF demonstration farm based in Essex.
Hearing the challenges farms face was a real eye opener for many of us. We heard about different soil types, the impact they can have on a crop and the work required to produced good yields. It was shocking to hear how devastating the UK weather can be for farmers and how unpredictable it is, having huge impacts on yields. This year there was a disastrous hailstorm just before harvest which in some places took out over half of a crop. We also learnt more about how farms are overcoming these challenges like diversifying into different areas such as adding animals or energy crops and how beneficial these can be to both crop rotation and extra sources of income. The farm walk made us appreciate the hard work farmers do and how much we take for granted.
